Set against the backdrop of a natural disaster, “Kedarnath” wins over hearts!

Kedarnath is a 2018 Hindi commercial film directed by Abhisekh Kapoor. Sushant Singh Rajput and debutant actress Sara Ali Khan starrer Kedarnath is a romantic thriller set against the backdrop of 2013 Uttarakhand disaster. Produced by Ronnie Screwvula and Pragya Kapoor, under the banner of RSVP Movies, the film released on 7th December. With a duration of 116 minutes, Kedarnath is one of the big budget films of this year.
The film is based in the mountain ranges of Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. The story revolves around a young Hindu girl Mandakini aka Mukku (Sara) who is a vibrant yet rebellious daughter of an orthodox Brahmin priest and Mansoor (Sushant), a Muslim porter in Kedarnath shrine. All was seemingly well, till Mukku meets Mansoor and is drawn towards him. As the fire of their passion burns, the Hindu-Muslim communalism takes it’s shape, the nature in it’s disastrous form ultimately washes away every bit of hatred and love from the holy land of Uttarakhand.

The film starts with a melodious track ‘Namo Namo’ and sets the mood of the holy pilgrimage. The film captures the beauty of the Himalayas and the nature in all it’s vibrant hues give a picturesque setting that won’t fail to impress the viewers.

Sushant Singh Rajput as Mansoor is a soothing pleasure to the eyes. His calm nature and spirited soul are just what his character demands. In a scene he sings ‘Lag jaa gale’ and it’ll surely give some goosebumps. Sara Ali Khan made a promising debut as Mandakini. She in all her glory justified her presence and ability throughout the film. The supporting casts like Nitish Bharadwaj, Alka Ameen, Pooja Gor and Nishant Dahiya have also done justice to their roles.

Kudos to it’s amazing VFX and special technicalities that brought live to the disastrous calamity of Uttarakhand. Director Abhisekh Kapoor has done a fantastic job of recreating the horror in the second half of the film. The dark grey clouds, monsoon in it’s horrifying form, heavy flow of water splashing away the huts roads and everything in its way, the special effects, the amazing background score and some bone chilling moments will definitely make you glued to the seats while sending shivers down the spine.

Amit Trivedi’s soulful music gives that romanticism to this otherwise thrilling love saga. Though special effects stole away the show, still Tushar Kanti Ray’s cinematography deserves special mention.

Abhisekh Kapoor tried to present the same age old concept of class and religion divided love stories in a new way. The tragic landslide provided the needed sensation in the story. The film is a worth watch for debutant actress Sara Ali Khan and for witnessing the tragic disaster of Uttarakhand. So despite it’s flaws, Kedarnath is a pre Christmas gift to the viewers.
