Dil Bechara: A Review of Sushant’s Last Film

Dil Bechara, Friendzone ka mara…..A.R. Rahman’s music struck the best chords while watching the movie. Firstly, this is NOT A SPOILER post. Yes, you guessed it. I dared to do it. I am reviewing Sushant Singh Rajput’s Dil Bechara. And that too, when? Right after watching and crying over it. The film is the Hindi adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars. It’s a coming-of-age romantic drama, centered around the unconditional love between Manny and Kizie. The film is the one, which can make you cry and smile at the same time.

Director: Mukesh Chhabra, a débutante

Main Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput (Manny), Sanjana Sanghi (Kizie Basu), Sahil Vaid (JP), Saif Ali Khan (Abhimanyu Veer), Swastika Mukherjee (Kizie’s mother), Saswata Chatterjee (Kizie’s father)

Rating: 9/10

Backdrop of Dil Bechara

Dil Bechara is set in the city of Jamshedpur. It revolves around the lives of Manny and Kizie. Kizie Basu is fighting thyroid cancer. She meets Immanuel Rajkumar Junior aka Manny, a survivor of osteosarcoma. Kizie doesn’t like Manny at first. Manny is an ever cheerful, chatterbox and “Khulke Jenne Wala” while Kizie is a bit introvert. But eventually, they bond over music and movies. And they fall in love. They live a life full of adventures and possibilities to do great stuff, daily. They go to Paris to fulfill Kizie’s long time wish.

Review and Insight

Dil Bechara is Mukesh Chhabra’s directorial debut. And I think, it’s a great start. Dil Bechara seems promising enough and we look forward to more from Chhabra. When it comes to the actors, then no adjectives could describe Sushant’s prowess in the film. Sanjana Sanghi did great in her debut film as a lead role. One cannot leave behind how brilliantly Swastika Mukherjee and Saswata Chatterjee bring out the pain. The pain of parents who know they might lose their child one day.

A.R. Rahman’s music is therapy for our souls. From “Taare Gin” to “Khulke Jeene Ka”, all the songs were married beautifully to the film.

Dil Bechara’s cinematography is beautiful. The picturesque scenes showing the landscapes of Jamshedpur and the shots of the industrial skyline are exquisite. Moreover, the “life lessons” by Manny brought tears to my eyes. He probably said some of the hardest truths of life. Even, Saif Ali Khan had a powerful cameo. His words seemed to be the Gospel truth.

Although some scenes of Dil Bechara were quite abrupt, it was an overall good show up there. These specific scenes, which I don’t want to mention, could have been filmed with more reasons to them. But again, scenes of the unconditional love of Manny and Kizie made me cry. I loved  those little moments they had, especially their late night tour of Paris. The film is surely going to make you believe in love stories.

Final Note

Dil Bechara is really special to all. The point of commonality is that it is Sushant’s last film.It is probably the last time we would see the “King of Smile”, smiling onscreen. The film is sure to ache your heart and make you feel good about it, simultaneously. Do watch it, it’s available for free on Disney+ Hotstar.
