Third gherao at medical college

R.A. Ahmed Dental College observed a third gherao in the same week on Thursday, 17th September,2015 by agitated students and interns demanding the college union election be held. The two other recent such incidents were in relation to security and negligence over death of a fellow student of the college by the doctors at SSKM and that of Calcutta National Medical College respectively.

The gherao had been consecutively held since Tuesday morning. Students are of the opinion that authorities were influenced by a certain political party, and had no proper union meeting since as early as 2010. Although they temporarily lifted the protest once the principal and superintendent were taken away to NRS on Wednesday, the same resumed the next day with the officials returning to work.

“We are concerned about the students well being”, said the additional director of health services who visited the college. He added that a decision on poles would be taken in a few days time.

When the college council failed to assist the students, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) sent a delegate to meet Keshari Nath Tripathi, governor of Bengal. The demand was clear cut: a free and fair election to the students union. Khan assured that the necessary steps would be taken and the students’ democratic rights would not be hampered in any way.
