A powerful earthquake has felled a 16 floor apartment complex in Taiwan. Families had gathered for the lunar new year celebrations. Report says that at least seven are dead and more than 30 are trapped. An entire residential complex of four buildings containing almost 100 homes toppled to the ground. Rescue teams have been trying to reach people trapped in rubble since the quake struck at a magnitude of 6.4.
President Ma Ying-jeou has promised an “all-out effort” to rescue people. More than 200 people were rescued, but a baby, young girl and two adult men did not survive, officials have said. Interior Minister Chen Wei-jen said he feared more people may have been in the fallen apartment block than usual as families gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year.He said investigators would examine whether the building’s construction met requirements.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said “We’ve activated Safety Check in response to the earthquake that struck Taiwan. My thoughts are with everyone in Taiwan and across our global community affected by this disaster.”
