Deborah Herold becomes World No.4 Cyclist

Life has never been easy for Deborah Herold , right from her childhood. When Deborah was ranked as the world No.4 cyclist according to the World Elite Women Ranking on Friday , it was yet another milestone in her career.

Deborah’s brilliant performance , last month , at the Track Asia Cup , an Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) – recognised event , where 150 cyclists from 10 countries fought for the top rankings, was the reason for India finishing in third position, with 11 medals , in total , out of which 3 were bagged by Herold alone. She clinched her first track gold at the 2012 Amritsar Nationals and she has been consistently performing well , ever since.

However, this young girl from Andaman and Nicobar is not only a champion of human spirit on the field alone but also an absolute pioneer of courage in the real battlefield of life as well. Very few people are aware of the fact that at the age of nine , Deborah survived Tsunami and displayed true courage when she got seperated from her family and had to wait patiently for the waters to recede and for a timely rescue.

This brave girl never gave up on life. Deborah says she is in a “very happy space” at the moment with the improvement in her ranking. This 20 year old Tsunami survivor hopes to become the No.1 cyclist in the world in the years to come . With her brilliant performance , she might even qualify for the Rio olympics in 2016. Deborah Herold is indeed a figure of inspiration not only for Indian women but for all Indian citizens.
