You Create, We Nurture

Special Story

A New Year, A New Beginning

Each new year brings with it new promises, new resolutions and new hopes. Each year also brings with it a series of lessons, learnt the hard way. You make mistakes, you goof up, make a mess of things, hurt others and end up getting hurt in the process. But that’s life! Every new year’s eve, you heave a sigh of relief, that you made it through and prepare yourself for the new year to come.

As the year draws to an end, you’re now looking back. Some of you might be looking back with anger, some of you with a smile, but you have to admit, you’re not the same person you were a year ago. You’ve changed, and you know it’s for the better. So here are a list of 10 things that the past year taught us, just a little something to kick start the year with.

1) “Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line”~ Lucille Ball

new year, learn to love yourself

The moment you begin to pay more attention to someone but yourself, is the moment you begin to lose yourself. We have all lost ourselves once in a while, haven’t we? Lost. Despair. Directionless. A sense of squalor and darkness engulfing us. You’re important. You’re special. Don’t let anyone tell you different.

2) ” You can only let someone throw so many stones at you before you pick them all up, put them together and build a wall to keep them from doing it again” ~ Unknown

this new year, don't lose hope

Sometimes putting up a wall around yourself is the best way to protect yourself. Why do I say this, you ask? Well, let’s just say that each brick is the result of disappointment, disillusionment and broken promises. But as they say, you should be ready to open the door when the time comes

3) “Awake, Arise, or be forever fallen” ~ John Milton

this new year, don't give up

You’ll get through it. You always do. No matter what happens or how many times you’ve been knocked down, you know you will rise again. You have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. So irrespective of what happens, you can shrug and smile and say “I’ve seen worse”

4) “There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate” ~ Linda Grayson

this new year, reach out to your friends

A tête-a-tête with your best friend and good music is the best therapy you can ask for. A tough exam? Heartbreak? Pondering over meaning of life? An answer to some of life’s toughest questions can be found in either of these. So, the next time you feel an attack of the blues coming up, plug in your earphones, and retreat into a world of your own. Sometimes, a break from reality is all you really need.

5) “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

this new year, don't let others change you

Be the best version of yourself you can possibly be, and the rest is sure to follow. You do not have to try to be someone else. You do not have to change yourself for the world , the world will change for you. And why should you? You, with all your limitations and flaws and imperfections, should be enough.

6) “A life spent making mistakes is not only more honourable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing” ~ G.B Shaw

this new year, don't be afraid to make mistakes

You will make mistakes. Accept it, and don’t try to deny it.  If a person tells you that he or she doesn’t goof up, don’t feel bad – they’re probably lying. You can’t be human AND perfect at the same time. The two words “human” and “perfection” are mutually exclusive

7) “If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do today?”~ Steve Jobs

this new year, dowhat you want

In  this coming year, if you have something to say or do, DON’T HOLD BACK. You want to scream in the middle of a crowded road? You want to tell someone you love them? You want to pack up your bags and just leave, never to return?Look around, what’s stopping you? The next time your gut tells you to do something, just do it! Take the plunge, and see where it leads you.

8) “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle ” ~ Plato

this new year, do not be afraid to communicate

In a world where verbal communication is almost becoming non-existent, make it a point to really talk. Start a conversation with the guy sitting next to you on the train, smile at the young boy you see everyday outside your office, wish the mailman “good morning”. Simple words like “hello” can bring about a smile, that will brighten up your day. If this is not life, then what is it?

9) “Who could refrain that had a heart to love, and in that heart courage to make love known?” ~ William Shakespeare

this new year, don't be afraid to fall in love

Fall in love. No, don’t be scared. They say that it is better to have loved and lost than to have not loved at all. Well, that’s true. Don’t think about it, don’t ask yourself “what if?”, don’t ponder about the “why”, the “who” or the “how”. Love is not love if it isn’t spontaneous!

10) “The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family”~ Lee Iacocca

this new year, spend more time with your family

When the going gets tough, they are the only ones who will stand by you, ready to support you no matter what. If you have a family who loves you, value them; remember, there are many who wish they have what you already do.

Make it a point to do something that you haven’t done in the past year.  It could be something that you’d always wanted to do or something that you’ve always found an excuse to not do. New years are about doing new things, aren’t they?

2016, too, will be a roller coaster ride – of ups and downs, of endings and new beginnings, of losses, and most of all, of memories. But don’t worry, better things are coming. On this note, HAPPY NEW YEAR! AND, HERE WE GO AGAIN…….
